My Teaching Philosophy:Everyone can make art, and everyone who makes art is an artist. I hope to break down the misconception that only those with certain gifts or talents can be artists by empowering my students through a teaching practice that seeks to dismantle hierarchies in art and education. Art is simply a form of expression, another way of communicating or processing things, and everyone has the right to use this tool to tell their story or process their feelings.
The value of art lies not in its monetary value in the auction house, the gallery, or the museum or it’s perceived cultural capital, but in its ability to aid in the artist’s expression, to make viewers feel seen, inspired, or connected, and to create community. I am not interested in “the art world” but rather in the process of making, and sharing that process with others. As an art educator, I seek to create a safe and approachable space where students can express themselves and connect with others without feeling intimidated. Art-making is a vulnerable practice; my priority as a teacher is making students feel safe, seen, heard and understood. |
